I’ve met Mr Amaechi a few times and he is so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so nice. So nice. He is 6’10” and fills a room physically, but his lovely aura also dominates in the best possible way. Kindness – what a boon. The first NBA player to talk openly about being gay, John Amaechi has become something of a figurehead for ‘minorities’ in all types of sport. It’s ridiculous really, eh? We’re all the same, innit. Except for Margaret Thatcher. Anyway, using this public recognition, he has built a post-NBA career as a valued public speaker, a supporter of various charities, a voracious social campaigner in support of disadvantaged children, and he has also trained as a psychologist. I imagine he makes the perfect therapist. And, despite growing up in the UK, he was born in . . . yep, you guessed it – BOSTON.
(For Eddy, who drives me mad xx)
