Peck was so ace. He was a lifelong humanitarian and liberal, was anti-nuclear weapons and pro-abortion, despite being brought up a Catholic. He loved playing the role of Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird (for which he scored a shiny Oscar) because the character was such a good man and he agreed with lawyer Finch’s sterling morals. A dedicated democrat all his life, Gregory Peck was vocal about his disgust at the Vietnam war; and in later years he became an in-demand public speaker. In his heyday he was a truly brilliant actor who did nearly all his own stunts, and was also a goddam beautiful man to boot. Some of these kids today should take note, eh . . .
