ALAN BATES

Face: HIRSUTE
Body: HIRSUTER
Arms: HIRSUTEST
Personality: TEMPESTUOUS
Distinguishing Features: VIGOUR
Attainability: SADLY SUCCUMBED TO CANCER

The scene in Women in Love where Alan wrestles naked with an equally nude Oliver Reed is well erotic. It’s like a trippy, sexual journey into an exploration of male body hair patterns. Bates was a terrific actor. His own troubled personal life (he was in the closet for most of it, and presented an image of a ladies man with sexual confidence in abundance) surely was the driving force behind a lot of his performances. If you’ve never seen any of his films, then check ’em out. The Pinter scripted The Go-Between is utterly brilliant, with Al here turning in a near faultless portrayal of Ted Burgess in love with Julie Christie’s luminescent Marian *sigh*. God, he was sexy.

(This is dedicated to my great pal Eddy, who is also very hairy and a bit of a nause xx)
